What our Customers are Saying...

“What she’s brilliant at — almost in a league of her own — is mixing personal passionate stories with totally comprehensive and accurate science,” he said.  “It’s not easy to do, it’s not easy to make complex scientific issues interesting, but no one does it better than Sandra Steingraber.”- Ithaca College

“I think she has been my favorite speaker in the 2 ½ years I’ve been doing this.  So gracious, so enthusiastic about her subject---you could tell that her mission is to get the word out to people---no self-interest involved, just a true activist.”- Ohio University

What our Customers are Saying...

"He was terrific, better, an enormous hit; and very generous with his willingness to greet people who came up to him, pose for pictures other than those we’d arranged for prior to his arrival.  And, as you said, a terrific luncheon conversationalist.

It’s very evident he cares about and relates well to youth…very clear that his presentation wasn’t his “job” but his passion.  He inspired them, without a doubt. We’re 100% happy."

Sandra Steingraber is Living on Earth

Sandra Steingraber was recently interview on WBUR's popular radio show Living on Earth. Steingraber discusses her efforts to make the environment part of the public health discussion with host Steve Curwood.

"When you go into the doctor's office you always fill out questionnaires about your family, medical history, and there are no questions that ask you about, you know, where is your water supply compared to the toxic waste landfill? What are you exposed to in your occupation?

And so the new thinking now within the scientific community about the way genes and environment interact is more like a piano with our genes as the keyboard, if you will, and the environment as the hands of the pianist."

Video Friday: Double Feature! Jeff Lieberman - OK Go - End Love

Time Warp! Jeff Lieberman and Eric Gunther just finished a very cool video: For those of you who like numbers: The fastest they go is 172,800x, compressing 24 hours of real time into a blazing 1/2 second. The slowest is 1/32x speed, stretching a mere 1/2 second of real time into a whopping 16 seconds. This gives them a fastest to slowest ratio of 5.5 million. If you like averages, the average speed up factor of the band dancing is 270x. In total they shot 18 hours of the band dancing and 192 hours of LA skyline timelapse - over a million frames of video - and compressed it all down to 4 minutes and 30 seconds! Oh, and notice that it's one continuous camera shot. Whew!

Traynham on Respecting the Diversity of Thought

Robert Traynham asks, "where are the voices of reason in political debate?"

In a recent piece for The Philadelphia Tribune, he says:

"With the advent of the 24-hour news cycle and the ever-persistent producer that encourages political personalities (including the author of this column) to speak in sound bites, I’m afraid to say that the quality of our conversations has been downgraded — to junk status...

The Internet, talk radio and the instant news cycle has joyfully given us the tools of instant gratification but, sadly, it also has polarized us and made us less than thoughtful...

In fact, we have become a society that is more jaded, more cynical and seemingly less respectful of differing school of thoughts."

Jeff Lieberman is 1 of 20 Under 40

Congratulations to our friend Jeff Lieberman, whose essay "Half a Million Years of Art History" (co-written with Eric Gunther) was accepted into a new anthology titled "20Under40."

"20UNDER40" features twenty essays about the future of the arts and arts education, each written by an emerging leader under the age of forty. The anthology will provide a unique arena for new ideas by formally gathering the thoughts of young artists, teaching artists, administrators, researchers, and other arts and arts education professionals—legitimizing the talent of young leaders by bringing their ideas out of the margins and into the forefront of our dialogue.

In their essay, Jeff Lieberman and Eric Gunther review the evolutionary purposes of the arts and advocate for a greater sense of symbiosis between the arts and the sciences to keep aesthetic development at the core of our survival as a species.

The book is set to be released December 1, 2010. Learn more about 20Under40 here.
